An iced chai latte is cold-brewed or steeped-and-chilled spiced black tea combined with milk and served over ice. It’s sweet, warmly spiced (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove), creamy from the milk, and refreshing in a way that hot chai isn’t.

The home version is significantly better than Starbucks. Starbucks uses a pre-mixed chai concentrate (Tazo Chai) with a lot of added cane sugar. Making it yourself lets you control the spice intensity, sweetness, and chai quality — and add an espresso shot for the dirty version.

What’s in an Iced Chai Latte?

A proper iced chai latte has four components:

ComponentWhat It DoesHome Option
Chai concentrateThe spiced tea baseSteep 2 bags for 5 min in 4 oz hot water
SweetenerBalances bitterness and spiceHoney, simple syrup, or brown sugar syrup
MilkCreaminess and bodyWhole milk (traditional), oat milk (best plant option)
IceCold and dilutionLarge cubes melt slower — better control

For dirty iced chai: add a shot of espresso. It layers on top of the chai and adds a roasted coffee dimension to the spiced tea base.

Classic Iced Chai Latte Recipe

Ingredients (1 serving)

  • 2 chai tea bags, or 2 tsp loose-leaf masala chai blend
  • 4 oz hot water (around 200°F / 93°C — just off boil)
  • 1.5–2 tsp honey or simple syrup
  • 4 oz milk (whole, oat, or almond)
  • 1 cup ice (about 6–8 cubes)

Instructions

  1. Steep the chai. Place 2 tea bags in 4 oz hot water. Steep for exactly 5 minutes. Under-steeping = weak flavor. Over-steeping = bitter. Don’t squeeze the bags.

  2. Sweeten while hot. Remove tea bags, then stir in honey or simple syrup while the chai is still warm. This ensures it dissolves completely.

  3. Cool slightly. Let the concentrate sit 2 minutes, or cool it faster by pouring it into a cold container.

  4. Build the drink. Fill a 12–16 oz glass with ice. Pour the chai concentrate over the ice. Add milk.

  5. Stir and taste. Give it a gentle stir. Taste for sweetness and adjust. The chai should be slightly over-sweetened at this point because the ice will dilute it further as it sits.

Dirty Iced Chai Latte (With Espresso)

The dirty iced chai is the home barista’s version. Adding a shot of espresso to an iced chai creates a drink with the caffeine of coffee (60–80 mg from the shot) plus the gentle caffeine of chai (25–50 mg from the tea), with the warming spice of chai balancing the bitterness of espresso.

Additional ingredient:

  • 1 double shot of espresso (2 oz), pulled and cooled 1–2 minutes

Two methods for adding the espresso:

Method 1 — Espresso on top: Build the iced chai first (chai + milk + ice), then slowly pour the cooled espresso shot over the surface. It will sink through the drink and create a visible layer effect. This gives you coffee-forward first sips and chai-forward finish.

Method 2 — Espresso on the bottom: Pour the cooled espresso over ice first, then add the chai concentrate and milk on top. This gives more uniform espresso-chai flavor throughout.

Which is better? Method 2 for most people — the flavors integrate fully. Method 1 for visual presentation and the two-flavor tasting experience.

Make-Ahead Chai Concentrate

For multiple servings, make a concentrated batch:

Batch concentrate (4 servings):

  • 8 chai tea bags or 8 tsp loose-leaf chai
  • 16 oz hot water
  • 2–3 tbsp honey
  • Steep 6–8 minutes (longer steep since you’ll be diluting more with milk)

Strain and refrigerate. Keeps for 5 days. To serve: use 4 oz concentrate + 4 oz milk + ice per drink.

Cold steep (overnight method): Place 4 chai bags in 16 oz cold water. Steep in the refrigerator overnight (8–12 hours). Produces a sweeter, less bitter concentrate — no heat needed. Great for very smooth iced chai.

Iced Chai Latte FAQ

What does an iced chai latte have in it? Brewed chai tea (usually black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, and black pepper), milk, sweetener, and ice. The Starbucks version uses a pre-made Tazo chai concentrate.

Are iced chai lattes healthy? Plain iced chai latte is relatively moderate — about 150–200 calories with whole milk. The main variable is sweetener: Starbucks adds significant sugar in their concentrate. Homemade versions can be made with less sweetener and non-dairy milk for fewer calories. The tea itself contains antioxidants from black tea, and the spices (especially cinnamon and ginger) have known anti-inflammatory properties.

Is a chai latte just a spiced latte? Technically: a chai latte is tea-based (spiced black tea + steamed milk), while a regular latte is espresso-based. A dirty chai latte bridges them — spiced tea + milk + espresso. The “latte” in chai latte refers to the steamed/cold milk component, not espresso.

How much caffeine is in an iced chai latte? About 25–50 mg per serving from the tea. Compare to a regular latte’s 60–80 mg from espresso. A dirty iced chai latte (with espresso) will have 85–130 mg total.

Can I make iced chai latte with chai powder instead of tea? Yes. Use 1–2 tsp of chai powder (like David Rio or Oregon Chai mix) dissolved in 4 oz hot water, then proceed with the same recipe. The flavor profile is slightly different — powders tend to be sweeter and less complex than loose-leaf or bagged chai.
