What is a Barista?

A barista is an espresso machine “coffee artist” who possesses extensive knowledge about coffee and makes, decorates and serves drinks to the client.

Barista (male/female) is the Italian word for bartender. The Italian plural form is baristi (male) or bariste (female). The term was initially adopted in English, where its meaning shifted somewhat. Whilst a barista in Italy serves up whole sorts of beverages, the term in English-speaking countries pertains to an someone who makes and serves espresso-based beverages with an air of professionalism, mainly in caf?s. The term later on got into the German language with this meaning.

A barista is also oftentimes a master of “latte art” who makes pictures in the cappuccino while pouring the milk foam on to the espresso.

In their field of activity, baristas require a knowledge of coffee blends, coffee roasting, how to operate and maintain espresso machines, froth milk and much more. Knowledge such as this can be learned in barista classes.
